What are the hazards of prolonged sitting?
1. Causing constipation. Prolonged sitting can slow down gastrointestinal motility in patients, leading to constipation symptoms such as reduced bowel movements, difficulty in defecation, and dry stools. Patients can be treated with osmotic laxatives like lactulose oral solution or sorbitol under medical guidance.
2. Causing sciatica. Prolonged sitting can affect the sciatic

nerve, resulting in sciatica, which manifests as pain in the lower back, buttocks, and posterior thigh, and may be accompanied by symptoms such as lower limb weakness, numbness, and tingling. Patients can be treated with muscle relaxants like eperisone or cyclobenzaprine under medical guidance.
3. Causing lumbar disc herniation. Prolonged sitting can cause chronic damage to the lumbar spine, gradually accumulating and leading to lumbar disc herniation, characterized by symptoms such as lower back pain, radiating pain in the lower limbs, numbness, and weakness. Patients can be treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen or diclofenac sodium sustained-release tablets under medical guidance, along with neurotrophic medications such as vitamin B and mecobalamin for adjunctive therapy.
